Underwater Photography Classes

Group Classes

I'm really excited to be partnering up with UB Diving in Courtenay to offer underwater photography classes! What I have learned from participating in and running week-long intensive photo workshops is that there are a few important things for progressing your skills as an underwater photographer.

1. Learn theory, technical aspects, and techniques

2. Assignments to push you out of your comfort zone and expand your skillset

3. Lots and lots of hands-on time in the water developing your skills

4. Constructive feedback about your images and those of your peers

The last thing I want to do is to make this a "one-and-done" where you come for a class, take some notes, see some interesting things, and then everything stops there. My goal with offering classes is to hit all 4 of the above points so that you can move forward on your own photographic journey of continuous improvement. After a few hundred dives with my camera I am still learning lots of new techniques and trying new things. Some work, while others don't, but every time I try something new I learn something valuable. I want to create a learning environment with my classes which achieves the same thing. So here is how this program will address all of the above points:

1. Theory & Technical - Small group classroom sessions - max 6 attendees to keep things personal and provide lots of room for participation

2. Assignments - Provided as part of any class; share your favourite photos with me and I will give you an individual assignment to try based on your skillset and experience level

3. Hands-on Time - Photo dive days organized through UB Diving - go to a good photo site, dive with other photographers, maybe try out some of my gear, debrief and review images afterwards - more details TBD

4. Feedback - Image reviews at the end of every classroom session. Image reviews can also be done ad-hoc, so you don't need to be signed up for the specific class to join us for the image review at the end. Image review on its own is $15 per session.
